The Evergreen Fund has advanced partnerships and made progress at our Wildfell Centre for Environmental Recovery this autumn. |
We welcomed Lower Thames Crossing, a new highways project that is an essential component in the UK's future transport infrastructure, to Wildfell on the 30th of September, and shared insight into the pioneering woodland, meadow, hedgerow, and pond restoration programmes underway. |
We also had a field trip to Strawberry Hill, the largest area of scrub and young woodland in Bedfordshire that provides a habitat for large populations of an increasing diversity of species, monitored by local naturalists. |

Baseline Surveys
We have completed our baseline surveys and are now collating the data and producing reports to document the starting point of our proposals.

We have completed a drone survey of the site, flying a repeatable flight path enabling us to monitor progress over time. Both aerial photography and video has been captured covering the full site.
Woodland Creation
Our Forestry Commission, English Woodland Creation Offer grant application has been submitted approval and is anticipated in the next fortnight. Procurement has been completed with fencing and preparation to be commenced as soon as formal grant approval is received.

We were thrilled to a host a visit of the Forestry Commission Board at Wildfell and Little Cowbridge wood. It was a great opportunity to showcase our woodland creation success and future aspirations. Wildfell was deemed to be a nationally significant project.
Yard
We have created an access track and temporary compound to provide an accessible location for welfare, material and plant storage while we construct a permanent building and yard. Access track is constructed with a no dig makeup to avoid any impact to roots of adjacent trees.

We welcome Lower Thames Crossing to Wildfell |
On 30th September Ground Control welcomed the Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) senior leadership team, local councillors and project partners from Forestry England and Natural England to its Wildfell Centre for Environmental Recovery.
The tour of the 296-acre Evergreen Fund site enabled sharing of insight into the pioneering woodland, meadow, hedgerow, and pond restoration programmes underway.
Plans are already in place to continue to share biodiversity expertise and key learnings from Wildfell to help LTC to take away a deeper understanding of how it can achieve Hole Farm ambitions. On 29th November representatives from Ground Control will join LTC Executive Director Matt Palmer, Natural England Chairman Tony Juniper, and other key stakeholders to mark the planting of the first trees at Hole Farm Community Woodland, part of National Highways and the Lower Thames Crossing’s ambitious target to plant an additional one million trees in the area. |

Strawberry Hill field trip |
This 150-hectare site, the largest area of scrub and young woodland in the region, has presented a remarkable opportunity for WTBCN to protect this unique habitat and create a place where people can be inspired by nature’.
The new model is providing a timely funding bridge to acquire potential land as it comes on the market. This was a clear demonstration of collaboration that had energised the management team with renewed purpose and ambition. Their excitement, enthusiasm and knowledge for this gem of a project was truly inspiring.

Somerset Wildlife Trust £50k loan for gallop conservation |
The Evergreen Fund has advanced a short term £50k loan to the Somerset Wildlife Trust (SWT). The loan is to buy and retore a 1.87-acre horse gallop that runs through a 14 acre species rich calcareous downland called, 'The Gallop at Green Down'.
The site offers a unique opportunity to restore the horse gallop to species-rich grassland and physically reconnect the upper and lower slopes of SWT Green Down.
Green Down supports one of the most important Large Blue butterfly populations in Europe and is important for an assemblage of other priority species, mainly invertebrates.
The above Large Blue butterfly was declared extinct in Britain in 1979, but it has since been reintroduced as part of a long-term scientific and conservation programme, with Green Down now being one the best sites in Europe to see it. |
