Ground Control, in partnership with Mansfield District Council, has led a design-and-build project to enhance accessibility and the visitor experience at Berry Hill Park. The project brought together multidisciplinary teams to create engaging and inclusive play spaces, both within the playpark and the surrounding natural areas.

Community collaboration was central to the project’s success. The teams donated surplus materials to local initiatives and engaged with schools by organising site visits and offering talks and career advice.

A key objective for Mansfield District Council was to increase accessibility in both play and woodland areas. This was achieved by opening up previously inaccessible woodlands and constructing new play spaces. The development also included a new community hub and café, providing a welcoming destination for visitors.

The café is a model of modern, sustainable design, featuring flexible spaces, high energy efficiency, and low running costs. It is insulated, heated with heat pumps, and powered by roof-mounted solar panels. Large windows maximise natural light, and the building sits on gravel foundations, avoiding concrete to reduce environmental impact. Local contractor Tanbry Construction, managed by Ground Control, completed the build.

Infrastructure improvements, such as new car parks, drainage, and biodiversity enhancement, ensure the park is a true community destination. New footpaths weave through woodlands, connecting green spaces with natural seating areas.

Innovative play spaces, like the ‘Mine Shaft’ inspired by the area’s coal mining heritage and designed by KOMPAN, offer play opportunities for all ages. Ground Control managed and installed these features as part of the overall scheme.

Andy Chambers, Parks Development Officer at Mansfield District Council,
"The GC team on-site has been nothing short of excellent throughout the project. They have been very proactive, come up with solutions when required and been so amenable and helpful in so many ways, to the extent that from my side of the project it’s been so easy."

This project sets a new standard for accessible, sustainable, and community-focused public spaces in Mansfield. You can read the full case study here.
